How to Prepare an Interior Design Brief in Thailand

Begin with life, not a style label

Words such as minimal, modern luxury or tropical are interpreted differently. Routines are more useful: when people wake, how they cook, whether they work from home, how often they host, and whether children, older people or pets use the space.

For a business, add peak customer and staff numbers, deliveries, payment, queues, storage, cleaning and how long the space can close for work.

Record constraints that a reference image cannot show

• morning and afternoon sun, wind-driven rain and airflow;
• current air-conditioning, extraction and building systems;
• noise, smell, privacy and security;
• estate, condominium, mall or industrial-estate rules;
• structure or finishes that cannot be removed.

These need evidence from the site, documents and responsible parties. They should not be concluded from photographs alone.

Divide the budget

Separate design fees, construction and systems, loose furniture, equipment and contingency. This reveals what can be controlled and which allowance is affected by a design change.

Identify decision owners

Name who approves layout, brand direction, budget, systems and opening. An organisation or factory should have an owner for each information stream rather than allowing unlimited edits without a final decision-maker.

Make a one-page brief

Include the objective, users, areas in scope, principal functions, items to retain, budget, timing, references and open questions. If the one-page version contradicts itself, resolve that conflict before detail begins.
